Creativity is not just a skill but a powerful way for children to express themselves, explore ideas and understand the world around them. From the moment pupils join us in the Early Years Foundation Stage, they begin a creative journey that continues all the way through to Year 6, growing in confidence, imagination and technical ability.

Our art curriculum is thoughtfully designed to give every child a rich and varied experience. Core disciplines—drawing, painting, and sculpture—form the backbone of our teaching and these skills are revisited and strengthened year after year. As children master foundational techniques, they are encouraged to explore more advanced processes, experiment with new materials and develop their own artistic voice. Each unit builds on the last, ensuring progression that feels natural, exciting and deeply rewarding.

What truly sets art at Salmestone apart is our approach to connecting classroom learning to the wider artistic world. We are incredibly fortunate to have the Turner Contemporary within walking distance. Our pupils have opportunities to visit the gallery throughout their time at Salmestone to experience exhibitions and take part in creative workshops. These visits spark curiosity, broaden cultural understanding and show children that art is full of possibilities.

Back in school, children bring these experiences into their own work, often creating pieces inspired by what they have seen at the Turner. Pupils learn to think critically, talk confidently about art and take pride in their achievements.

By the time they leave Salmestone, our pupils have not only developed strong artistic skills but also a deep appreciation for creativity in all its forms. They understand that art is a powerful tool for communication, reflection and joy—and that their own ideas are worth celebrating.
