At Salmestone Primary School we are constantly working towards being a fully inclusive school and our vision is for all children to have access to the curriculum at an appropriate level, so that they can learn to the best of their ability at all times. We strive to identify and remove barriers to learning and enable children to reach their full potential during their time with us.
At Salmestone we have a number of pupils with identified special educational needs (SEN) including Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), speech and language difficulties, Social, Emotional and Mental Health difficulties and global delay.
Staff have been trained to identify the signs of common SEN and how best to support children with these needs in the classroom. All of our class teachers take into account the needs of individual children and we provide support for children’s SEN through our whole-class teaching as well as our classroom environments.
Where necessary we provide additional interventions for groups or individuals that are carefully tailored to fit the children’s needs. Our Teaching Assistants are trained and experienced in a range of interventions such as speech and language, maths, literacy, social skills and physical coordination.
We work closely with parents and carers of children with special educational needs and keep parents informed of children’s progress and any extra provision that they receive, by meeting with parents at least three times a year. The Senco also hosts a monthly meeting on the last Friday of each month to give parents the opportunity to discuss issues such as support in school, the EHCP process and visual supports.
When children’s needs are more complex, we seek advice from our specialist colleagues in outside agencies, and use their specific areas of expertise to inform and guide our work with children.
